Slack is the primary messaging/text communication platform of the team. To get started, go to https://join.slack.com/t/gtor/shared_invite/zt-ldqv3o9y-7VXJZH~4AooKxSRJhBcf2w In the top right (circled in this image), click the "Create an account" button (unless it takes you to directly to the prompt to submit your e-mail address, in which case go to the next step).
Then, proceed to create a new account (even if you had an account with a previous Slack workspace), and create a new account with your Georgia Tech e-mail (@gatech.edu). It is not directly connected to your Georgia Tech login so you will need to create a password, but you can choose to use the same one as your Georgia Tech Login. From there, welcome to Slack:
In the left-hand side there are "Channels". Channels are like various group chats for different purposes. You will likely already be in a few channels when you first join. To join a channel, hover over the "Channels" button and click the Plus sign. Then, you will see a list of channels you could join if needed.
The important channels are members should be a part of are #general, #random, and their subsystem channel. #general is the most important and will have announcements posted there. Additionally, the subsystem channels can be found in the list of channels as described in the previous paragraph. If you don't have a subsystem, send a message in the #new-members channel introducing yourself and mention that you do not have a subsystem yet.
If you scroll down in the left-hand column, you will also find the option to Direct Message either a person or a group of people, and recent DMs will show up in that column. To send a direct message, hover over the "Direct messages" button in the left-hand column, click the Plus sign, and enter the names of the individuals you want to send a Direct Message to. If you enter multiple names, you will create a group message.
Additionally, feel to update your profile and add a profile picture by clicking the avatar/icon in the top right corner.
If you want to reply to a message directly, hover over the message and click the chat bubble that says "Reply in a thread", for large conversations in Slack, this is recommended as this encapsulates the message thread without pinging everyone else in the channel or direct message.
Finally, you can get Slack on your phone as well! Slack is available on iOS and Android, and will send you a notification when you receive a message.
If you have any more questions on how to use Slack, click here to access their user guide.
At the beginning of each semester, each member of the team must first complete the onboarding form. The onboarding form is to collect contact, demographic, and other information from each member and the answers are maintained by the Team Lead. This is the first step to join GTOR and must be completed by everyone each semester (fall, spring, summer). As a new member, select new member in training as your sub-team. You should have been assigned to a sub-team or training program based on your interests. If you don't have a subsystem, send a message in the #new-members channel introducing yourself and mention that you do not have a subsystem yet. (see instructions below on Slack). If you still have not received a response, DM Wasiq Kabir on Slack.
In addition, all members are required to pay dues each semester which are $40 each semester, within the first few weeks of the semester. Please reach out to Wasiq Kabir on Slack to pay dues.
Finally, all members should be part of the GTOR and SCC Slack.
To join the GTOR Slack, see the instructions in the previous section. To join the SCC Slack, go to sccgt.slack.com and sign in with your GT login.
The SCC is located at 575 14th St NW, Atlanta, GA 30308. There are
For video conferencing, especially due to COVID-19 restrictions, GTOR utilizes Microsoft Teams to meet virtually and discuss designs, schedules, projects, etc. To install Microsoft Teams for Desktop, click here.
Once installing Microsoft Teams, log in with your official Georgia Tech login (GT e-mail address and password). Unlike Slack, MS Teams will use your official GT account to sign you on and as a student, you have free access to the software. If you completed the onboarding form, you should see on the left-hand sidebar the button "Teams" and if you click that, you will see GT Virtual Shop. If you don't see that or have issues, send a message to the #it-helpdesk channel in the GTOR Slack.
You will also notice there are multiple video conferencing/messaging channels as well in the GTOR Virtual Shop that are divided by sub-teams. Different sub-teams will meet in their respective video conferencing channels on MS Teams, based on the agreed-upon times which are often posted in the Slack channels. If there is a meeting in a particular channel going on, you will see that in the feed when you click on a channel; click the purple "Join" button to join the meeting.
For additional support and help with Microsoft Teams, see their user guide resources here.
DUO is a 2-Factor Authentication service that works with your GT login. Simply put, Georgia Tech requires that you set up this service so that every time you log into your GT account, an extra step is required for the system to verify it's really you, such as tapping a notification on your phone or responding to an automated voice call. It is not considered optional, Georgia Tech services will not function well if you do not complete it.
To set up DUO, please see the instructions provided by GT on how to set it up: https://twofactor.oit.gatech.edu/students
The GTOR ME Drive is a 3TB network drive for GTOR on the servers of the Mechanical Engineering department at Georgia Tech. All Computer-Aided Design (CAD), Finite Element Analysis (FEA), and simulation files are stored on the ME Drive; essentially for all design files. In order to connect to this network drive, you will need to follow a few steps.
If you do not have DUO 2-Factor Authentication enabled for your GT login, you will have problems and many GT services will not work for you, including connecting to the ME Drive. See the instructions on setting up DUO 2FA in the previous section.
UPDATE: The GTOR ME Drive is longer accessible from your computer directly, currently only through VLab. We don't know why, we're still figuring it out. Refer to VLab/MyCloud instructions below to access the GTOR ME Drive..
To begin, you will either need to be connected to the GT ethernet or to the GT Wi-fi network/Eduroam. If you are not connected to the GT Wi-fi or ethernet, then you will need to follow the additional step of connecting to the GT network via the VPN.
First, you will need to install the VPN client and connect to the GT VPN server. Georgia Tech's OIT department has already prepared detailed instructions on how to install and connect to the VPN on a variety of devices/OS, so click here.
Now that you have connected to the VPN, it's time to connect to the network drive.
Select a Drive Letter of your choice, and type in \\ad.gatech.edu\mefs$\stugroups\ in the Folder field. Click the "Reconnect at sign-in" and "Connect using different credentials" buttons. Click the Finish button when you're done.
Now, you will need to input your credentials to connect to the ME Drive. For your username, enter AD\username and for your password, type in your GT login password. Check the box saying "Remember my credentials" and click "Ok".
Now, the GTOR ME Drive should appear in your network drives and you should be able to access it. These steps will work on any VLab computers as well. You will not need to map the network drive each time, If you have any issues connecting, reading, or editing files located in the GTOR ME Drive, send a message describing the issue to the #it-helpdesk channel in Slack for assistance.
1. Connect to GT VPN (can download client from https://anyc.vpn.gatech.edu)
2. From Finder, click “Go” and “Connect to Server” or hit Command K
3. Type in smb://mefile4.me.gatech.edu/Research/GTOR and click “Connect”
Georgia Tech VLab is a virtual desktop provided to every student at Georgia Tech that provides them access to a "virtual computer" that is tied to their GT account. This virtual desktop comes pre-installed with many of the softwares used at GT and GT Off-Road such as SolidWorks and ANSYS.
First, make sure you have Two-Factor Authentication setup with your GT login, using Duo. You will know if this is set up because you will have to use the 2FA whenever you log in with your GT login. If you do not have this set up, follow the link provided in the earlier section about DUO 2FA on this webpage.
Next, to access the VLab, go to mycloud.gatech.edu , and log in with your GT login.
It may ask you download something called Citrix Workspace and will try to detect it; this is an additional app that is used to connect to the VLab. If you don't want to install it, you may click the option to use the web/in-browser version instead.
If you want to use the Citrix Workspace, here are instructions from GT on how to install it: https://faq.oit.gatech.edu/content/vlab-where-do-i-get-citrix-workspace
Once logged into MyCloud, you will see multiple tabs, click the one that says Desktops to see the VLabs you have available to you.
You may not have this many desktops, but you may see multiple and it will depend on your major which ones are available to you.
Click either the COE or ME VLab desktops as that will have the software you need such as MATLAB, SolidWorks, and ANSYS. From there you have now set up and logged into your VLab, which will work the same as a regular PC!
Note: Regarding file storage on the VLab, you can save your files to your P:Drive located on the VLab, if you save them elsewhere, you risk losing your files forever when IT upgrades the VLab desktops!
